Each search would result in millions of listings making it impossible to sort out the "wood from the trees" and most of the results seemed to be U.S. based - sourcing Australian manufacturers was virtually impossible. Search engines rely on traffic to survive so the more sites they list without qualifications the better for them. From this mayhem came the idea in late 1996 that perhaps a directory of Australian businesses might help better profile Australian products and services.
